York is spared from Leeds postmark

PLANS for mail posted in York to bear a Leeds postmark have been dropped, after one of the city’s MPs intervened.

The city will still not have its own name on letters but will now be covered by a “North and West Yorkshire” mark. Royal Mail announced last month that all items posted in the York postcode area will be sorted at a new centre in Leeds and said postmarks would have the Leeds name. York Central MP Hugh Bayley lobbied Royal Mail for a rethink and the company has now confirmed a new North and West Yorkshire mark will be introduced from this weekend.

Mr Bayley said: “York and North Yorkshire are among the most popular tourist destinations in the UK and it’s great news that we will not lose our separate identity.”

I'm sorry, but this is actually not what Hugh Bayley was after.

He campaigned to keep the York postmark not to 'save us' from a Leeds one.

Mr Bayley: “The York postmark is unique and valued by the tourist industry, local businesses, visitors to York and York residents. None of these groups would want to see the York stamp disappear.” (York Press 8th October 2012)

A 'North and West Yorkshire' postmark is no better/no worse than a 'Leeds' one.

So, pretty much a waste of time. Thanks Mr Bayley...

What I'd have liked was for York to retain its sorting office and the jobs that go with it, but with all the main parties comitted to privatising anything and everything, the drive to make the Royal Mail "profitable" at the expense of workers' livelihoods and customers' services continues apace.

A North and West Yorkshire postmark does nothing to sugar that bitter pill as far as I'm concerned.

Just think of the ink that could be saved if the postmarks read 'York' or 'Leeds'. Personally I'd prefer 'God's Own Country'.

What about just"Yorkshire"?
This is almost as big an insult as when Dairycrest planned to close the Hawes Creamery and make Wensleydale cheese in Lancashire!

I'd prefer the 'Free North' or 'Scotland'. The proposed Free North would be a self governing country from Yorkshire up to the Scottish border, or to make a bigger country join an independant Scotland not ruled over by fools in Westminster out to line their own pockets at our expense. They can use the Welsh, Unionists and rich southerners for that.

Personally I couldn't care less what the postmark says, they're illegible anyway. I'd prefer the money to be spent proving a service where post came early in the morning, parcels were delivered instead of cards sneakily put through doors to save the postie carrying them, and cards which look like they could contain money being 'accidentally opened' every week.

Having said all that as M points out, the campaign was to save the York postcode--not to avoid being associated with Leeds. No victory here methinks.

So York won't get a Leeds postmark but one that will say West and North Yorkshire... and the difference is..??

West and North Yorkshire covers everywhere from Marsden and Slaithwaite right round to Saltburn and down to Selby and almost as far south as Barnsley... this postmark would cover all those areas so persons receiving letters with this postmark will still have no clue where it's actually come from!
