THE artist behind the first piece of public art installed at York’s new council headquarters has been given a sneak preview of how his work will look.
Mat Lazenby, director and co-founder of Shambles-based Lazenby Brown, used the words of York poet WH Auden’s As I Walked Out One Evening as the inspiration for the sculpture, which will be based in the courtyard of City of York Council’s new home at West Offices, in Station Rise.
Six artists have been commissioned to create public artworks for the building.
It is a joint scheme between S Harrison Developments and Buccleuch Property, whose spokesman, Gavin Jones, said: “As developers, we see the whole picture, and it is great to see art which complements the work we’ve been doing to safeguard the heritage of this important building and deliver a modern, efficient and sustainable council headquarters.”
