SCIENTISTS at the University of York have found a way to make the family Christmas especially magical this year.
Those who fancy learning how to make their tinsel float or how to make a match light from nothing are being invited to a free event at the National Science Learning Centre, at the University of York.
The event, on December 1, is intended to be a fun way to help families and children engage with science.
Technician Simon Quinnell said: “It is a bit of fun and enjoyment – that’s what science should be. It’s a nice way of learning together as a family and a good way to bring the family together.
“It’s about doing an activity that has some educational value as well at Christmas.
“Adults can wow the kids and get them talking about science.”
Among other hands-on demonstrations, visitors will also be able to learn why pineapple and jelly do not mix and how to conduct a remarkable experiment using ice cubes.
Dr Steven Rossington, from the University of Salford, will lead a lecture exploring the properties of solids, liquids and gases in a loud, explosive, whizz-bang lecture entitled Chemistry With A Bang.
The event will be held at the National Science Learning Centre in Siwards Way, University of York, from 10.30am to 3pm.
