WORK has been carried out on traffic lights which failed at a busy York junction over the weekend and caused delays for drivers.

The signals at the junction of Malton Road and New Lane were out of action due to an underground cable fault. City of York Council electricians were on duty over the weekend to discover the source of the fault.

The lights were back on yesterday, but a council spokeswoman said an “intermittent cable fault” was still causing some problems and traffic contractors were continuing to work on it.

Queues also formed at the nearby junction of Heworth Road, East Parade and Melrosegate at the weekend because a “green man” signal allowing pedestrians to cross Heworth Road was staying on for longer than usual, so that motorists had to wait at the crossing for longer.

The council said it was trying to find out whether a fault had occurred or whether a key held by Heworth Primary School, allowing it to control the pedestrian phase at school arrival and leaving times, had made changes which stayed in operation too long.

The spokeswoman said residents can phone 01904 551361 to report traffic light problems which will then be passed on to electricians or signal maintenance contractors.
