A PARISH council has opposed new homes planned for a former tannery site in York – despite residents saying they wanted the site to be redeveloped after it was targeted by arsonists and vandals.

The £5.24 million scheme by David Wilson Homes would create 53 houses on the site of Sheriff Hutton Road, in Strensall.

The site has been empty for eight years and villagers have regularly voiced their anger at the derelict state of the land.

However, Towthorpe Parish Council has objected to the plans.

It says it welcomes the scheme “in principle” but is unhappy about issues including the design of some of the homes and a cycle bridge over the River Foss, the lack of a play area and possible future congestion problems.
