NORTH Yorkshire’s new Police and Crime Commissioner will meet the group set up to scrutinise her for the first time this week after she won the race to head policing in the region.

Julia Mulligan, is the region’s first PCC, with the power to hire and fire chief constables and responsibility for setting North Yorkshire Police’s budget, after winning last week’s election.

The Conservative candidate beat Labour rival Ruth Potter by 47,885 to 34,328 votes, but turnout across North Yorkshire was only 13.3 per cent.

North Yorkshire’s police and crime panel, whose task is to hold the PCC to account and ensure transparency, is to meet on Thursday to thrash out its work for the next four months.

This will include discussions on who the force’s new chief constable will be. Tim Madgwick, who currently holds the position on a temporary basis, has already said he wants the job on a permanent basis.

The panel will also have to discuss who will be the chief executive officer and chief finance officer within the PCC’s office.
