A FRAUD investigation has ended in the prosecution of a York man who claimed more than £4,600 in benefits which he was not entitled.
Martin Oliver, 39, of Nursery Drive, claimed housing and council tax benefit based on his low income, but City of York Council was informed in March 2011 that he appeared to be working.
The probe found he had been in full-time work since November 2010 and this had not been reported to the authority. The council said Oliver refused to speak to investigation officers throughout the inquiry into the fraud, in which he was overpaid £4,205.34 in housing benefit and £458.52 in council tax benefit.
York Magistrates’ Court also heard he had been caught for a similar offence in 2010 and was given a sanction, and he was sentenced to 200 hours’ unpaid work and ordered to pay £1,000 in compensation and £213 in costs for the latest offence.
