Vandals set fire to wheelie bins in Tang Hall, York

VANDALS left a trail of destruction in the Tang Hall area of York after setting fire to 11 wheelie bins in a night of “mindless vandalism.”

Police were alerted to the spree in the early hours of yesterday by North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service, which had officers on the scene tackling the fires until 5.20am.

Witnesses, or those with information, are now being urged to come forward by York Police.

A spokesman for the force said: “Not only was this an act of mindless vandalism, but it is dangerous and thankfully nobody was hurt.

“It is also very inconvenient for the residents whose bins have been damaged and somebody is going to have to bear the cost of replacing them.

“Anyone who knows who is responsible or witnessed the incidents is urged to contact the police or Crimestoppers with information.”

According to the police, four bins were set alight in Etty Avenue, three in Burlington Avenue, one in Constantine Avenue, one in Fourth Avenue, one in Seventh Avenue and one in Rockingham Avenue.

Anyone with information is asked to phone York Police on 101 or Crimestoppers can be phoned anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Tang Hell ... when caught they will get a slap on the wrist which will encourage them and others to to commit more serious crimes.

Again, I second the "slap on the wrist" sentimens. Punishments for small crime which plants the seeds of a criminal lifestyle are far too small!
I do anticipate some total idiots will no doubt start the petty, barrel scraping argument, "wah wah... wahh our kids have nothing to do"... and then go on to try invent some totally wacky and warped excuses for these parentless morons (however the excuses are often entertaining, for a laugh)!
It's also funny to note that they feel people will report the criminals, (also in times of falling crime.. its more people dont bother reporting it) people may be reluctant to report these mindless vandals, because if one of them happens to have burnt themselves on the bin they set fire to, they would quickly of course take the the bin owner to court.

What a great joy it is to live in a virtually crime free zone, according to the North Yorks Police PR machine.

Where were the bins? Is this a new council penalty for leaving them out early/late?

Would be interesting to hear where our new police commissioners will find the resources to combat this sort of issue.

I know there is no excuse for this kind of behavior, but why don't people put their bins away after they have been emptied.

It happened in the early hours - before the bins had been emptied.

It is standard practice to put the bins out the night before collection as they have to be out before 7am.

Indeed.
Not much to set fire to when they're empty...
