THREE York doctors are among seven across Yorkshire who are through to the finals of a new award scheme aiming to reward scientific excellence in the diagnosis of patients with heart disease.

The initiative, believed to be the first of its kind in the country, has been launched to mark the contribution made by Yorkshire’s own Heartbeat Appeal and the charity’s founder Alec Bloom.

Doctors from NHS cardiology departments across Yorkshire were invited to submit examples of their best work and outline how the award could help to develop their career. Cardiac physiologists Philip Durkin, Laura King and Olly Shriver from York Hospital are among those shortlisted.

The finalists will be put through their paces by a judging panel in Leeds on Friday.
