A POLICEMAN was left with a suspected broken jaw and a PCSO was injured after they were attacked while on patrol in York.

A 28-year-old York man has been arrested following the assault, which happened on Thursday night.

The attack took place just before 6pm in Beckfield Lane, Acomb.

The PC and Community Support Officer had spoken to the man about antisocial behaviour when he attacked the PC, leaving him with a suspected fractured jaw.

As the PCSO tried to detain the man, he too was attacked and left with a hand injury. The man was eventually arrested at the scene.

Mike Stubbs, deputy secretary of the North Yorkshire Police Federation, which represents rank and file officers, said: “We have been in contact with our colleague today and are waiting to hear how serious his injuries are.

“If they are as bad as feared, it is yet another illustration of the risks that police officers face as they work to keep the community peaceful and safe.

“We are grateful for the actions of the PCSO who came to the officer’s aid and also sustained injury.”

He said such attacks were rare but said Government cuts could make them more common.
