ANGRY truck drivers protested outside Tesco stores in York after the supermarket chain sold off its distribution to Carlisle-based Eddie Stobart.

About 100 truckers from Doncaster, all members of the Unite union, started the day at Tesco in Clifton Moor before moving to the Tesco Express store in Piccadilly.

Steve Lambert, one of those protesting, said 183 jobs were threatened after of the move because Eddie Stobart was looking to use “surplus within its own system”. He said: “Five weeks after we were transferred to Stobart they said that all 183 transportation drivers at Doncaster were at risk.”

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We hope that talks will resume as soon as possible between Unite and Eddie Stobart Ltd, and that a settlement can be reached. We will continue working with Eddie Stobart Ltd to try to provide alternative jobs for all the affected drivers.”

Nobody at Eddie Stobart was available to comment.

Does this mean my shopping won't get delivered this afternoon?

Good luck to the drivers.

To transfer them across from one company to another, then deprive them of their livelihoods makes it look like Tesco and Stobarts have been acting in chaoots to drive a coach and horses through the TUPE legislation that's meant to protect workers in such situations.

Both companies should be brought to heel and not allowed to get away with using the recession to boost their already-obscene profits by destroying jobs.

should get delivered ok - it's the truck drivers that deliver to the stores that were protesting, not the drivers that deliver the home shopping

I will tell the current Mrs NoNews not to worry then.

Seriously though, I hope the drivers get this sorted, nothing worse than going to work under a black cloud and not knowing if you are for the chop or not.

I will show solidarity and shop elsewhere. Trouble is all the major supermarkets are out to make big profits for their shareholders.

How many people going to asda instead this week (or any other shop) in protest to this would it take for the loss of money to outweigh the savings they are making by putting the truck drivers out of a job?

It's stupid , in fact how about if 200 people officially switched shope in protest

The average family of 3/4 might spend £120 a week for example

The average small
Family /student/single person might spend around £40 a week

So let's say an average of £80 a week or £320 a month per shopper

If 200 people boycott that makes £64000 pounds tesco are losing a month

Would the cuts or changes be worth it then? How
Many people need to leave before its not worth it

but if they add 5p to just 10 popular products that several hundred thousand people still buy then the £64000 is more than made up for.......

This is competition, at the end of the day.

I sympathise with the Tesco drivers, especially at this time of the year, but if Tesco and Stobarts combined have a surplus of drivers, then some of them will inevitably have to go.
And complaining about supermarkets profits? I bet all of us go along the aisles looking for a bargain, which the supermarkets can only offer by squeezing the suppliers.
