FIRST buses in York are being given new purple, lilac and white liveries as part of a wide-ranging plan to improve service delivery on key routes to increase passenger numbers.

Customers on the Number 1 route linking Wigginton, York, Acomb and Chapelfields are the first to try out the new service. The side of the bus has the word York in prominent lettering with key local landscapes, including York Minster, Clifford’s Tower and York Racecourse, as a panoramic backdrop.

Coun Dave Merrett, City of York Council’s cabinet member for transport, welcomed the move, saying improving standards would help the authority encourage more people on to buses in York and therefore tackle the twin problems of congestion and air pollution.

Customers will be given ticket offers to try out the high-frequency service – a bus every ten minutes or better daytime Monday to Saturday – which First says will offer more punctual, reliable and cleaner buses.
