POLICE were called to a charity boxing event near after two members of the crowd began fighting.
Police were called to Eggborough Sports and Social Club after reports of a fight at a boxing fundraiser in memory of Phil Cleary, who died in a motorcycle accident, and Beanie Smith, the 15-year-old girl killed in a car accident in Selby this summer.
Mickey Bradshaw, owner of Mickey’s Boxing Academy, said that after the tenth bout two men started fighting in the audience. A number of chairs were upturned before security staff ejected them. However, the ringside doctor refused to continue and the event was called off.
Mr Bradshaw said: “We put the chairs back that had been knocked over and people sat down waiting for the show to start, but you can’t have a show without a doctor.”
A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “On arrival officers found that the organisers had calmed the situation down.
Police did not receive any complaints and no arrests were made.”
Mr Bradshaw said: “We’ll be presenting a £250 cheque to the Thomas Cammack Appeal and Cancer Research regardless, as we would normally raise between £200 and £300.”
