THESE are some of the weird and wonderful winners of a children’s art competition to be part of Illuminating York.
The people behind the Illuminating York ran a competition challenging youngsters to come up with their own wonderland creature to help transform ten acres of the Museum Gardens for the festival.
Using lighting, large scale projections and new technology the Wonderland in the gardens project is being populated by creatures from the imagination of artist and comedian Vic Reeves and the children’s work will join Vic’s in helping to decorate the gardens.
Organisers had a lot of entries and the overall winner, as chosen by Vic, was Eloise Hewson from The Mount School with her design called “tribal protector”.
Eloise, along with the other top three entries from each age range, has won a family ticket to see her projection on Friday.
All the winners’ creatures will be turned into projections which can be seen during festival opening hours tomorrow and Friday at the Hospitium.
The category winners were: four-11 years – Devon McCluskey, Harriet Hymas and Maja Millhouse; 11 – 16 years – Ailish Brown, Eloise Hewson, Ruby Haswell; 16+ - Kevin Holdsworth, who won with two entries and Nicola Theakstone.
Supported by the City of York Council, Arts Council England, York Museums Trust, Blackpool Council and Visit York, this year’s festival uses over £500,000 worth of lighting technology to celebrate York’s rich heritage and to challenge visitors to see the city in a different light.
Coun Sonja Crisp, cabinet member for tourism, said: “This competition was a fantastic way for people to get creative and involved in the artwork of Wonderland.”
The festival runs from tomorrow until Saturday from 6.30pm to 10.30pm each day. Tickets are on sale now priced £5 per adult, under fives free, children aged six – 16 years £1 and under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.
Tickets are available from York Theatre Royal in person, by phone on 01904 623568, or visit yorktheatreroyal.co.uk For more information go to illuminatingyork.org.uk
