THE head teacher of Joseph Rowntree School, in York, is to step down at the end of the academic year.

Maggi Wright, one of only two women secondary heads in the city will leave the post in August 2013 when she will have been head teacher for five years.

Mrs Wright took over from the previous head, Hugh Porter, in September 2008 and has overseen the school’s transition into a new £29 million building. She has been only the fifth head teacher at the school since it opened in 1942 and was the first female head there.

She took over as head having spent 11 years as the deputy head at Joseph Rowntree School alongside Mr Porter.

Mrs Wright also worked as head of art and design at Joseph Rowntree and head of upper school.
