The Lord Mayor of York, Coun Keith Hyman, centre, joins members of the River Foss Society for the litter pick on the River Foss
VOLUNTEERS were joined by York’s civic leader in their quest to keep the area around one of the city’s waterways rubbish-free.
The Lord Mayor of York, Coun Keith Hyman, gave his support to the River Foss Society and local residents as they carried out a litter-picking session, the last of the year.
Coun Hyman, who represents the Huntington and New Earswick ward through which the Foss flows, said: “York’s two rivers are an extremely important part of the city and the society does a great job in helping to maintain the Foss, so I’m proud to lend a hand in keeping our city clean.”
Equipment for the clean-up exercise was provided by City of York Council and the authority’s own river-cleaning boat was also brought in to help.
June Card, of the River Foss Society, said: “It’s a good example of how the council and volunteers can work together for the benefit of our city.”

My family has often said how lovely it would be to see the rivers around york particular;y where the newest bridge to cross the foss is in york, you have those fantastic old warehouses so why couldn't we give them a new lease of life and get river boats mooring up there on short stay basis to come and visit york?
