Italian restaurant's outdoor café plan

THE owners of an Italian restaurant in the centre of York are looking for permission to open an outdoor café area.

An application has been made to City of York Council for the path at the side of Il Paradiso del Cibo, on Walmgate, which leads into Dixon’s Yard to be used as a spot for tables and chairs until 11pm between Monday and Saturday and until 9pm on Sundays.

Agents acting for the restaurant’s owners said a retractable canopy would be fitted over the seating area and a wider side entrance with French doors would also be installed.

I think anyone in wheelchair who finds it difficult to get around York due to street clutter is a serious matter.

That said. I don't believe that the granting of this application would hinder many people, able bodied or not.

Of course York should have more street cafes
We are a tourist city and need to attract people
I am sure that planning wil not interfere with disabled peoples access etc so bring it on

Its so far out of the way down walmgate it hardly matters to anyone. I cant see why it shouldnt be approved. My only concern is that the kitchen area can hardly cope now with the limited space inside.
But good luck to them. Bye the bye well worth a visit if you can get in.

you try going round town in a wheelchair find out whats it like you may not think of how many cafes there are in york with street seating.but some shops i can't use i can't get through the doors easly but you won't think this if your not disabled.so before making comments am i sure think first.you may just get up and go not think about getting into town.people in wheelchairs have to plan ahead.we need to be as close as possible to where we need to be buses don't go to where you need them taxi need to be paid for getting on/off buses in/out taxis etc takes time and once some shopping done we have to find someway to carry it.so all i ask think about wheelchairs, prams,bl
ind people before putting comments like yours above.

One of the best restaurants in York - let 'em have their open area: it's extremely cramped inside. And that stupid complaint, above, about wheelchairs - they're not going to block the pavement: they'll take up a proportion of the space available in the path at the side of the building. And if you have problems geting into places, surely an outdoor area is an added opportunity?

Fair play to you and you have a good point, but you have picked the wrong story to raise this issue, as the restaurant is far from the town centre in Walmgate, and also the area it sounds like they want to use is not actually on the main pavement, it is down the side leading to Dixons Yard which would still leave ample space if for any reason you needed to be in Dixons Yard.

i agree i now see walmgate is not in the town centre so this is a tucked away gem by the sounds of it so fair point taken.

I just wonder where the large wheely bin and the pile of empty boxes and smelly rubbish currently in this area are going to end up.
If he gets permission I bet the 2 residents car park spaces at the side of this road have to go.
If the restaurant is so succesful and needs more room why dont they do what others have to do and move to larger premises and pay the extra rent and rates.
They have for a number of years now got away with tables and chairs on a footpath barely 6ft wide when other have been persecuted for A boards.
