Lottery jackpot is won at WH Smith shop in York

A JACKPOT winning lottery ticket has been bought at WH Smith in York.

The lucky ticket is known to have been bought in the Coney Street branch over three months ago, but the identity of the ticketholder or the amount they have won is a mystery. A spokesman for WH Smith said: “We are absolutely delighted to hear someone has won the lottery after buying a winning ticket in our York branch.”

A spokesman for Camelot said lottery winners who had won a substantial jackpot could select one of three options; to publicise the win, to not do any publicity – or to select a third option where the shop where the winning lottery ticket was purchased received “retail publicity” on behalf of the winner.

“That way, the winner does not reveal his/her identity but they give something back to the retailer,” he said.

The spokesman said it was standard practice to wait three months after the win to issue a “winning retailers pack” to the store, which could then consequently publicise the win.

Liam Fox, a supervisor at the branch which now has a sign advertising the win in its window, said: “It would be quite nice if they came back and shared it with us.

“Staff have been quite excited about it.”

I used to pray to God every night to win the National Lottery. He came to me in a vision once and asked me to meet him half-way: I had to go out and buy a ticket.

I doubt they were either - but it's good form in betting shop to buy the staff a drink after a good win, so I'd like to think if I won millions on the lottery, I'd pay for the staff at the retailer to have a night out.
