Victorian quack doctor new attraction at York's Castle Museum

The weird and wonderful world of a Victorian quack doctor will be one of the attractions at York’s Castle Museum over half term – but beware, the “cures” are probably not as good as he makes out!

Until November 4, the quack doctor will be seeking out the sick in the museum’s recreated Victorian Street, Kirkgate, and offering them a whole host of dubious remedies.

His visit is part of the museum’s look at Victorian medicines, which will also feature different activities in the hands-on studios.

Sarah Mortimer, assistant curator of social history learning, said: “The Victorian age was one of discovery and great advancements in medicine – but that said, there were still a lot of people who believed in traditional and somewhat unorthodox cures.

“The quack doctors were always there to take advantage of such beliefs and were a common sight in most towns and cities, peddling their dubious wares.”

Actor Chris Cade will be playing the quack doctor on the street between 10am and 4pm.
