House of Commons row over Richard III’s resting place

A ROW has erupted in the House of Commons over where the suspected remains of Richard III should be buried, as campaigners argue York’s case.

Historical reports suggest Richard had planned to be buried at York Minster, but he is believed to have been interred in Leicester after his defeat at the Battle of Bosworth by Henry Tudor in 1485.

MP for Bassetlaw John Mann suggested the priory of Worksop, halfway between “the warring factions of York and Leicester” and Leicester South MP Jon Ashworth said Leicester Cathedral would be most appropriate.

York Central’s Hugh Bayley said: “It’s 527 years since Richard was killed. Despite that passage of time, he is still very well-regarded in York.

“We have a museum to Richard III. We respect him enormously.

“But to argue on the floor of this place over his mortal remains is more like medieval cathedrals fighting over saints’ relics.

“I don’t think it’s appropriate.”

Earlier this month The Press reported that an online petition called Richard III: Come Home To York had been launched by The Richard III Foundation, advocating the reburial of the remains in York.

What could it possibly matter where some bones are put? Don't we have more important things to worry about and spend money on?

Have you any idea the amount of visitors this would pull into York, and the money they'll bring with them? Not to mention all the free publicity York would receive.

The remains of Richard of York's rightful final resting place must be in York.

Thanks Woody. It's something that should have been in the article.

When a deceased persons wishes are KNOWN as to where they would like to be buried, surely it most disrespectful not to honour those wishes? King Richard made plans for a Chantry Chapel at York Minster, I believe the building was started in his lifetime. Now just because he happened to be killed in Leicester why should he be used purely as a tourist attraction? That to me seems very sordid and tawdry.

It's nothing to do with money or tourists or publicity ~ that's exactly why Leicester want to bury him in their cathedral. The whole point of the petition which was started by people who CARE about King Richard as a human being (regardless where they live at the moment) was because HE wanted to be buried in York, he commissioned the chantry chapel which I believe was started in his lifetime, he chose to live in Yorkshire, he had his only son invested as Prince of Wales in York, he was Lord of the North for 12 years, York City recorded in their city records, at great risk to themselves "King Richard, late mercifully reigning over us, was most cruelly slain and murdered, to the great heaviness of this city...." the day after Bosworth.
He just happened to die in Leicestershire, that doesn't mean he cannot be interred so that he can rest in peace in the place he wanted. Our soldiers die abroad ~ are you saying they should be buried there?

You have your reasons, I have mine. We both have the same goal so stop moaning for the sake of moaning.

Some people!

I am not moaning ~ I am stating facts. My reasons are purely to do what is right for the man King Richard was ..... not selfish, money making reasons for a town that treated him most cruelly..

Blanc Sanglier, where is the documentary evidence that Richard wished to be buried in York?

I'm sure he would be happy that his mortal remains ( If proven to be his) help his favourite city prosper. I'm sure we can agree on that.

By the way. How can I be acting selfishly if I want it to benefit the population of an entire city?
