Family and friends of a much-respected former Royal Marine have paid their respects at his funeral in York.

Terry Patrick Halder, who served as a Royal Marine and had strong links with the Royal Marines Association both locally and nationally, died on October 8 at Mulberry Court care home, aged 78.

His funeral was held at St Aelred’s Church yesterday, with standard-bearers and a guard of honour along with a bugler who played The Last Post from the church balcony.

Donations were made during the service to the Royal Naval Association and the Royal Marines.

Mr Halder’s death came shortly after the Lord Mayor of York, Coun Keith Hyman, presented him with a framed copy of a page on Osbaldwick Parish Council’s website which praised his enthusiasm, organisation, hard work and commitment in ensuring Osbaldwick and Murton had a permanent memorial dedicated to the fallen.

Among those who have paid tribute to Mr Halder, of Osbaldwick, is Peter Shepherd, chairman of the York branch of the Royal Naval Association. He said: “Terry was one of those people who could communicate with anybody.

“He was very loyal and very proud of being a Royal Marine. He will be a hard act to follow.”

Mr Halder was the father of Janet and Carole and brother to Angela and Rita. He was also a much loved stepfather, grandfather and uncle.

His funeral was also attended by John McAnally, president of the Royal Marines Association, and Captain Paul Quinn, its secretary.
