There's NO business like Snow Business!.........oh and there's no salt in the bins either, so do YCC a favour when you volunteer, be a sweety and buy your own salt too!

i say get these people claiming benefits to work for their money getting them back in to work.all helps on a c.v.

I would be prepared to clear the snow outside my house if other people did the same and I wouldn't be sued if someone then slipped on a bit I may have left.

Snow Warden - isn't that just an upgrade of Warden with a Mac?

Fill all our salt bins and then we will do what we have done in other years - grit our pavements and help our neighbours - we don't need the bureaucracy of snow wardens.

I am on benefits,not that I want to be I would rather be working.
I have osteoarthritis which can at times be very very painful but I will be out there clearing what snow i can.

I clear the paths around my home and grit and salt the roads around
But this year it will be down to if there is any grit and salt in the council salt bins to use

I'm not making a particular comment one way or another but I find the following rather interesting. It goes back to the days of the Depression, and a time when the unemployed went to the 'labour exchange' daily to register for work (or dole if no work was available)

Yorkshire Evening Press 16th January 1933, reporting on a snowfall of 3 inches
"Although to some the outlook was dismal, to the unemployed it was quite a welcome sight. The staff at the Employment Exchange were at the offices in Parliament Street before 6 o'clock. At this hour there were ten men outside and others soon began to collect. Orders can intermittently up to 8.15. Altogether 207 unemployed men were engaged, and the footpaths and streets were cleared of snow by the afternoon"

Of course this was before the appearance of the likes of Lawyers4U and Claims Direct etc.

Do you get compensation if you slip and damage yourself making you unable to work etc - and do you have public liability insurance cover for if after clearing snow, a member of the public does and sues you? I suspect the answer to both questions is 'no', so volunteer at your own risk.

All this rubbish about people falling over on badly cleared pavements is the latest excuse for lazy people to not go out and clear snow in front of their own houses.

I have my snow shovel at the ready and will clear the whole street as I always do every year.

I don't need to be deputised as a "Snow warden" either.

Yep, urban myth, legend, whatever you call it, it's just an excuse not to clear snow.

No, it isn't an urban legend, it did happen. I can't remember exactly where but it was somewhere in the south,half a carpark was cleared of snow and somebody walked on the other half that wasn't cleared and slipped and sued the carpark and, amazingly, won. It definately did actually happen.

I can't find a single case where a householder has been sued for clearing snow outside their own property and having someone injure themselves on said snow.

Once someone sues over clearance of snow, regardless of the conditions pretty sure it's a precedent and applies to all cases. Hence why the ease. I could have found more but well I had 5 free minutes but well I only used google

I believe half the carpark had been cleared, she slipped on the half which hadn't.

Seconded. Such people are likely to be readers of the Sun and the Daily Wail, both notorious for portraying every single person on jobseekers as 'spongers' and 'scroungers' or 'layabouts', a drain on society's money... when in fact there's bigger drains of money such as the companies the government pays to either get people into work (such as A4e, which is essentially just a front for the managers to cream off loads of money for doing next to nothing for the jobless, with new figures showing people who were forced into programmes at A4e actually faring off worse than if they had sought work on their own) or companies the government pays to get disabled people off disability benefits, such as ATOS..... however such simple minded folk that read the aforementioned newspapers wouldn't know that because they can't be bothered to find out the true facts.

Agreed. The government might want the public to buy into the 'scrounger' tag, but the truth is usually very, very different.
