£10k boost for York and four towns

YORK’S market stalls could be the key to boosting the retail sector after the city was named as a Town Team Partner by the Government.

Goole, Beverley, Bridlington and Market Weighton, all in East Yorkshire, were also among 400 communities nationwide to win the status.

They will be given a £10,000 Government grant each to revitalise their high streets and main shopping areas.

York based its bid on a scheme to use the city’s market stalls for business start-ups, which would then receive help to move from the stall to temporary premises and finally formal leasehold premises in York.

York council leader James Alexander said: “Previous smaller schemes have proven that there is huge potential for the markets to be used to bridge the gap between starting a business and moving into commercial premises.

"The scheme will also be providing a much needed boost to the market-place, attracting a larger and more diverse customer base."

The recipient towns will also have access to practical support in revitalising shopping areas.

Details of proposed changes to the York Open Market area can be found in a current CYC public exhibition "caravan" located in Parliament Street ( open I believe until the weekend). This prefaces a public consultation on the scheme.
