Future of York’s Newgate Market up for discussion

THE future of York’s Newgate Market is the subject of a major consultation involving traders and shoppers.

City of York Council is asking for views on how it can help the market flourish over the coming years.

Coun Sonja Crisp, cabinet member for Leisure, Culture and Tourism said: “York’s market has operated for many hundreds of years and is part of the city centre’s commercial success. Taking part in the consultation will help secure its future and I urge people to come along and give their views.”

Anyone wanting to take part should visit the mobile at Newgate Market, every day until Sunday, from 9am until 4.30pm. You can also participate online at york.gov.uk or by email at york-markets@york.gov.uk

The Market needs to move back into Parliament Street and you will get more Traders coming back to York.

Oh not that old turnip! If the Council move the market back into Parliament Street then approximately 80 of the current traders will lose their stalls! Move yourself into this century! p l e a s e!

Explain please! Surely there is more space in Parliament Street?

I appears the traders feel tucked away in a back water in Newgate. move them on to parliament street and put the specialist market events in Newgate. people will hunt out and find the special markets. Please let the regular traders in York have the best market sites so at keep the trade local and not supporting foreign trade above our own.

Get into the real world Why would anyone want to (a) stand on the market when they can sell on the internet and (b) why would any customer want to traipse round the market when they can use the internet?

Because the market is cheaper for fruit and veg than a supermarket and you can buy locally and support local businesses rather than the coffers of the multi-national organisations trying to take over the world (like Tesco). People would want to sell on the market as they have a rapport with their customers which makes people like me want to shop there again. Customer loyalty doesn't just come in the shape of a card.

I agree with most of the posters above and have been saying it every time there is a story on here about it. Very simple move the market to parliament st. and put the specialist markets in Newgate.

Since when has York market been the cheaper option for fruit and vegetable? Leave it where it is - we certainly don't want the mess it creates in Parliament Street thank you!

Hope that adequate cycle parking will be retained, otherwise walls, railings and buildings will simply get used instead.

But Paul we're not talking about cycling, we're talking about something much more useful. lol

Ask the traders what they want?
The market is a crucial part of york and i personally think it would be great in Parliament St but is that their wish?
I do think we would seek out specialist fairs in Newgate
OR radical thought put glass roof over Newgate and keep it there so its dry all year and would look cool

Who wants to go round the market on a wet day to wind up getting soaked to the skin

Every time they have done any thing to York’s Newgate Market it as just put traders and customers off using it

Traders do not have the same stall position every day

Foreign traders get Parliament street for there market days but rest of the time the regular traders are tucked a way Newgate Market

Gangways in Newgate Market are too narrow for people to shop in comfort

If any thing is to be done it should but to make it user friendly for traders and customers over the years family's of traders have given up trading on York market as it as got less profiterble for the hours they have to work and stood in the cold and wet for 10 hours a day I have known trades start setting up a 3am to get there stalls ready for trade

If the market is to remain in the backwater that is Newgate then put a glass roof over it all!
