A SMASH and grab burglar has received his third prison sentence this year.

Craig Anthony Callaghan, 25, broke the shop windows of Clarks Shoes and Home And Car Insurance in Gowthorpe, Selby, reached through and took whatever he could reach, York magistrates heard.

Cathy Turnbull, prosecuting, said Callaghan set off alarms at both places and left bloodstains on the window of the footwear shop.

Callaghan, of Holmes Lane, Selby, pleaded guilty to two burglaries, both committed on the night of October 20 and 21. He was jailed for 20 weeks. He had received an eight-week sentence in February for theft and breaching a community order and a 14-week prison sentence for theft in May.

John Ratcliffe, defending, said his client had a long-term drug problem and had been influenced by his father, a “more established, serious” offender.

Burglary was out of character for Callaghan, whose record contained other types of offences. Since being released from his last sentence, he was no longer living with his father.

Ms Turnbull said Callaghan stole a laptop worth £150 from the insurance company, and some cash and a radio from the shoe shop.
