YORK is the most expensive place in the North for couples planning a weekend break.

The city ranks sixth nationwide, and top among northern English cities, in a survey of the priciest locations to enjoy two days away according to travel website TripAdvisor.

The survey takes into account the typical costs for a couple to have a night out - including a pre-meal cocktail at a four star hotel, a meal out, taxis, and an overnight stay for two in a four star hotel in August.

Total costs in York would be £237.77, lifting it from 11th most expensive last year to sixth this year. The dearest place in the UK was Edinburgh with costs of £331.28, followed by Cambridge, London, Oxford and Bath.

By contrast, Sheffield was the best value place with total costs of £153.94; Newcastle came in at fourth cheapest with total costs of £176.26; Leeds is at sixth cheapest at £184.33; and Manchester came in at ninth cheapest with £199.64.
