A NEW beer has been launched to celebrate York's status as European Tourism City Of The Year.

Named Prost! - the German origin of the word toast in English - the city's new brew will be served in York and Germany this week, offering a warm welcome to the city and a taste of quintessential England.

Prost! is the creation of York Brewery in honour of the city's newest accolade which proved it more than rivals Europe's most popular city break destinations.

Tourism bosses are inviting the German public to raise a glass to the official European Tourism City Of he Year as part of a wider campaign to encourage people from across Europe to consider York when planning a holiday.

Almost 70,000 German people came to York in 2007 - a small number compared with the 3.3 million Germans who visit the UK every year.

Tourism chiefs hope to change that with the launch of jet2.com's new route from Leeds Bradford Airport to Hamburg.

Gillian Cruddas, Visit York chief executive, said: "To tie in with our status as European Tourism City Of The Year, we are launching Prost!' to welcome our German visitors to York."

Apology accepted! What an excellent idea to install "ig-loos"! They should act as extra tourist attractions!

My sincere apologies to the entire Eskimo population. I’m still recovering from Munich’s Oktoberfest! I’ll make an immediate donation to the nearest seal pup sanctuary as well as campaign for the installation of a hydraulic “ig-loo” for your convenience.

What might stop you trying it is the fact it's not for sale. It was a one shot beer for this excercise only by all accounts.

Bugger. Looks like it's back to proper weissbier then. Oh woe is me, etc.

Won't stop my trying this new beer though, even if much of York Brewery's output is far too hoppy and bitter for my tastes.

How about a beer called YORK to celebrate York???

What would we celebrate? The only thing York seems to have going for it is delusions of grandeur (UNESCO World Heritage site ... bwaahahahaha!)

Do we all get a free beer as part of the residents first initiative then? ;-)
