THE ARCHBISHOP of York will today ordain ten deacons for the Diocese of York into the priesthood.

Dr John Sentamu will preside over the ceremony at York Minster, from 10am.

The eleven candidates were ordained as deacons by the Archbishop a year ago, and have since then been serving as curates (assistant ministers) in parishes across the York diocese, which includes 602 local churches between the Humber and the Tees and from the A1 eastwards to the Yorkshire coast.

As priests, they will be able to administer all the church's sacraments as well as continuing to lead worship and carry out pastoral work in the parishes where their in-service training continues.

Recent tradition in the diocese of York (since 1995) has seen all deacons ordained by the Archbishop in York Minster at the end of June or early July, but the candidates have been ordained priest a year later in the parish where they have served, usually by one of the suffragan (or assistant) bishops of Hull, Whitby or Selby. The candidates are as follows, shown with the parishes in which they will continue to serve as priests: the Rev Anna Burr (Fulford, York); the Rev Mike Cadwallader (Hull St Aidan's); the Rev Phil Carman (Acomb St Stephen's); the Rev Gail Dalley (Pocklington); the Rev Jon Dean (Great Ayton); the Rev Stephen Drury (Seamer, Scarborough); the Rev Josephine Evetts-Secker (Hinderwell); the Rev Ben Norton (Emmanuel, Bridlington); the Rev Joanna Parker (Pock- lington); and the Rev Steve Wilcox (Kirkella & Willerby, Hull).

Genuine question - I thought priests were Catholic. Can someone please explain?

The word catholic here means the universal or worldwide christian church. Roman Catholics are christians who acknowledge the authority of the Pope.
