THE girls were out in force as the summer season of racing in York continued to draw the crowds yesterday.

Glamorous frocks, daring hats and a passion for fashion were as much a part of the experience as studying the form for many of the thousands of punters who flocked to York Racecourse for the second day of the three-day May Festival - Ladies Day.

And many of those who sported some sensational designs were happy to pose for the camera while checking out the runners.

About 15,000 people came through the gates at York Racecourse yesterday, including Newcastle United and England striker Michael Owen, an avid racing fan - meaning 26,000 racegoers have so far attended the first meeting of the season.

"It's been another great day to come racing in York," said the racecourse's marketing manager James Brennan.

"The sun has shone at Knavesmire and people have been catching up with old friends and making new ones.

"There has been a really lovely atmosphere and it really has felt like the start of the English summer.

"We're delighted with the way the first meeting of the season has gone and that the plans we have put in place have come together.

"Now we're looking forward to the final day of the May Festival and the rest of the summer at the racecourse."

How can a hat be "daring"? Possibly they wear them where they should have frocks and briefs.
On race days you see more mutton around the city centre than at Murton livestock auction.

Why do racegoers always walk around for hours afterwards wearing those card tags? Presumably they are for restricted areas of the racecourse & the sadacts think we'll be impressed.
