A church in York is putting its money where its mouth is - by rejecting lottery funding for its rebuilding work.

St Michael le Belfrey, next to York Minster, is raising money for a major restoration of its west front. But the church council has decided not to seek money from the Heritage Lottery Fund, because the fund promotes gambling.

The church needs about £500,000 and says it is relying on its congregation to raise the money, without the need for lottery grants.

The Rev Roger Simpson, vicar of St Michael's, said: "The lottery itself is basically wrong, so to accept money from something that is in itself wrong would be to support something we do not believe in. Such funding would compromise the consistency of our mission and values."

Church treasurer Paul Millard said it had been indicated they could have received up to half the money they need for the restoration, due to the nature of the project and the building.

St Michael's is a listed building and was the last church built in York before the reformation. Guy Fawkes was baptised there in 1570. The church almost closed in the early 1970s, but has enjoyed a massive revival and now has a congregation of about 800.

The lottery issue was debated at a recent Parochial Church Council meeting, and an overwhelming majority voted against going for funding.

Mr Simpson said: "We had a lively debate. We looked at various arguments in favour of receiving lottery funding and against it."

He said it had been argued lottery funding would open doors to other funding; that lottery money was not the only Government money tainted by moral concerns; and that while church members should pay for ministry, it was acceptable to use Government money for the buildings.

But the arguments against outweighed those in favour. He said: "The thing that convinced me was the question: how can we accept money from the lottery fund when we do not agree with gambling?"

Mr Millard said: "We are relying upon God and the congregation and the people of York, as we are looking at up to £500,000 for this project. We are still waiting on the final amount it will cost us. There are hints it could be less than £500,000, which is encouraging. There will be a committee to discuss how we start the process of fundraising and the church will have to start giving."

The church is looking to raise more than it needs for the west front restoration, as it also wants to aid projects abroad, possibly in Bethlehem or Brazil.

Don't know why all the fuss. This church has a massive congregation, should cough up the cash with no problem. To me the moral issue is why spend hard cash on crumbling buildings.

There's no such thing! They might take stances on something like this to try to demonstrate that they are holier-than-thou, but the fact remains that the supposedly caring Church of England has no policies on dealing with bullying and disability discrimination and generally tries to ignore such issues when they arise, and there are other issues along the same lines.

Look beneath the pseudo-moral exterior, and you will find that the Church of England really is an extremely unpleasant organisation.

The Church commissioners have managed assets of £567 million pounds, from whch they have made a return approaching 10% over the last ten years.
It is not poor.
It is good to see they are not drawing on the lottery, which is intended for genuine needy causes.

The church, as one of this country's biggest landowners shouldn't be eligible for lottery funding in my opinion.
All the missionary zeal about gambling is utter tosh - the church invests it's very considerable wealth all over the place. Does that not come with financial risks the same as gambling?
Church's take money from people who can often ill afford it and then hand out the begging bowl for more.
Pay for your own repairs and stop trying trying to take the moral highground.
Grrrr!

Maybe you should get out your calculator, work out the odds, then stop because you've been a foolish idiot for the past god-knows how many years. You've literally more chance of putting a pound on "even" on a roulette table, then spinning the wheel until your money doubles so many times you've got a million.

Pehaps the church should not protect known paedophiles, then they might not have so many legal costs and be able to afford their own repair work.

The place is an anacronism in this day and age, It was falling apart when I was a lad and nowt was done to make it safe then, Has the public really had a god look inside the building? is quaint the word for it?...

But it would be hypocritical of them to accept the money when they preach that gambling is wrong. If they feel strongly enough about it to lose out on the money then that is their choice. It is not a choice that will hurt anyone.

Many churches manage to raise much needed money without accepting lottery funding so its not like they have thrown away their only chance of raising funds.

Correct. It would however be exceedingly ironic if a large block of masonry fell off and squashed him.

Well it does sometimes go to churches. This one happened to decline the offer. I guess no more lottery for you then!

I admire the vicar and PCC for not accepting the money which would have come from the lottery fund when they believe the lottery is wrong.
A few years ago a church in Swinegate could not afford to carry on and to solve the problem they rented a building and let the church out to the Baltimore Bar, I would add that the chuch I am talking about did not believe in drinking so how hypocritical is that?
Good for St. Michael le Belfrey that thay have stood up for what they believe in.

The church will manage to raise the money themselves it will just take longer than if they accepted money from a source they do not agree with.

The church is often getting stick for being hypocritical but as soon as they make a stand like this they are mocked.

There was a man that lived by the river. He heard a radio report that the river was going to rush up and flood the town. And that all the residents should evacuate their homes. But the man said, 'I'm religious. I pray. God loves me. God will save me.' The waters rose up. A guy in a row boat came along and he shouted, 'Hey, hey you! You in there. The town is flooding. Let me take you to safety.' But the man shouted back, 'I'm religious. I pray. God loves me. God will save me.' A helicopter was hovering overhead. And a guy with a megaphone shouted, 'Hey you, you down there. The town is flooding. Let me drop this ladder and I'll take you to safety.' But the man shouted back that he was religious, that he prayed, that God loved him and that God will take him to safety. Well... the man drowned. And standing at the gates of St. Peter, he demanded an audience with God. 'Lord,' he said, 'I'm a religious man, I pray. I thought you loved me. Why did this happen?' God said, 'I sent you a radio report, a helicopter, and a guy in a rowboat. What the hell are you doing here?
