Yorkshire seamer Matthew Hoggard ended a frustrating day in style with three late wickets for England Lions against New Zealand.
Hoggard, hoping for a recall to the Test squad to face the Kiwis next week, struggled to make an impact in front of watching selector James Whitaker.
However, the second new ball brought him three quick wickets to salvage something from the day.
Given the first new ball at the start of the day, Hoggard was outbowled by Durham seamer Graham Onions, who claimed a wicket with his second ball when he earned an lbw verdict against opener Jamie How.
Hoggard had to wait until the 85th over for his first success when Jeetan Patel edged to second slip. He followed up by removing Tim Southee and Iain O'Brien to leave the tourists trailing by 19 runs.
Chris Tremlett claimed two early wickets to leave the Kiwis struggling on 47-3 in reply to the Lions' first-innings 280. Tremlett then returned to dismiss Jacob Oram as they reached 261-9.
