Seaside route delays warning
NORTH YORKSHIRE motorists heading to the seaside are facing delays from next week until mid-summer as contractors work on a busy tourist route.
Yorkshire Water is to reline major pipes in the North Yorkshire area and the firm is warning the "essential maintenance work" will have an impact on traffic.
Crews are expected to begin work next week on the road between Wilton and Ebberston and will remain there for approximately ten weeks.
Work will then follow up on the main which runs along the A170 between Pickering and Scarborough.
The water main is prone to bursting and Yorkshire Water has contracted construction firm Laing O'Rourke to carry out the necessary repairs.
As the road carries traffic to and from the seaside, preparations are being made for two-way traffic lights to be temporarily installed to ensure safety of contractors and the public.
Carol Fairbrother, Yorkshire Water's project manager, said: "We have worked closely with the local authorities to try to keep disruption to a minimum, including suspending the work during the May bank holiday weekends, but we acknowledge there is not really a good time to dig up the roads."
Residents will be given prior notice should any disruption to water supply be necessary, but neither Yorkshire Water nor Laing O'Rourke workers should need access to any homes.
Residents are being warned to be on their guard and ask for identification should someone approach them asking for entrance to a property.
Yorkshire Water recently unveiled plans to spend £1.4 million overhauling sewers in Malton and began work on the scheme in January.
It is hoped the changes will help improve the quality of storm water discharged into the River Derwent after periods of prolonged or heavy rain.
Have your say
Has Yorkshire Water chosen a good time of year to carry out the repairs?

If you told us what was meant by 'mid summer' we may be able to answer the question

If you don't want to get stuck don't drive to the coast! I drove to Scarborough on New Years Day and got stuck in countless queues coming back. I wont be doing that again any time soon.

Avoid the A64 from Tadcaster onwards from Fridays to Sundays and all bank holidays!

Gardener says "Avoid the A64 from Tadcaster onwards from Fridays to Sundays and all bank holidays".
I agree, but the alternatives are the A1170 which will have water mains work, and the A166 to Bridlington which has the single line bridge at Stamford Bridge.
Go by train instead -- safer and in air-conditioned carriages.

As a child my father avoided the dreaded A64 crawl by taking us to Cleethorpes (from Harrogate via the A1 and across the Humber Bridge) for bucket and spade days.
Yes it's pretty grim, worse than Bridlington but small children don't notice that or care, and it was much faster (which they most certainly do notice). It's dual carriageway most of the way.

I'm coming to Yorkshire for a visit in May. I'll be going to Scarborough from Stamford Bridge on Saturday May 24. Is there another route I can take apart from A64? Or should I just settle for starting at 5am! I don't want to get stuck but as I do not live there I am not familiar with shortcuts that I hope exist!

Best wait till you have a pint in Stamford bridge and ask a local for the best route. Hope this of some help and you enjoy your visit.

At Fridaythorpe turn left, towards Sledmere. Carry on along this road, then you get to a crossroads, turn left and go through Foxholes and it pops you out onto the A64 a couple of miles out of Scarbro'! It's as good as you'll get from there!
