This is the shape of things to come at the new York High School.

While pupils have been on their summer holiday, lots of changes have been taking place at the Dijon Avenue site - home of the new York High School until January 2009.

Term for pupils at the new school will begin on Monday, September 10, once the final touches have been made to the extensive work which has taken place over the summer break.

Head teacher David Ellis said: "The logistics of bringing together the resources of two schools to create a single institution for 1,000 young people have been enormous. I am delighted however that all the work is on schedule for the smooth return of pupils on September 10." During the summer a temporary building of 20 classrooms and offices has been installed by Portakabin; Clugston Construction have been responsible for creating new teaching spaces including a Food, Art and ICT rooms as well as refurbishing and upgrading a number of other rooms.

Meanwhile, VITAL have been responsible for creating a new ICT network of over 400 machines and 20 interactive whiteboards with the capacity for 1,000 pupils and 130 staff.

Mr Ellis said: "All of the contractors involved in the work this summer have done a terrific job under difficult circumstances. The extra week's break for pupils will allow all the staff in the school to ensure that York High School is ready for pupils returning and making a full and proper start to their learning." Clugston site manager, Steve Hornby, said: "We have carried out external works extending the car parks and cycling facilities and, internally, we have refurbished classrooms including installing a second food technology classroom."

York High School has been formed by merging Lowfield and Oaklands School in Acomb.

Both schools are to operate from the Lowfield School site in Dijon Avenue from September returning to the renovated Oaklands in Cornlands Road, Acomb, in January 2009.

York High School opens for new Year 7 pupils at 8.40am on September 10 and for remaining pupils at 11am on the same day.

New uniform will be available for collection from Dijon Avenue, from 9am until 4pm, from Monday.
