SCAMPSTON Walled Garden will be appearing on the BBC flagship gardening programme Gardeners’ World on Friday.

The episode, which is devoted to the Royal Horticultural Society and its partner gardens, will feature TV presenter and garden designer Joe Swift talking to Lady Legard and head gardener, Paul Smith.

Lady Legard was behind the move to commission a new, contemporary garden within the grounds of Scampston Hall, where there is a long history of engaging the top garden designers of the time, from ‘Capability’ Brown in the 18th century through to Piet Oudolf in the 21st century.

Paul, pictured, has been head gardener at Scampston for five years and has seen the ‘bones’ of the garden really grow on during that time, with the hedges all filling out and starting to reach their planned sizes.

He said: “It was great to meet Joe and the team and it was a long day filming, but we’re really looking forward to seeing the finished item.

Everyone at work is looking forward to seeing both the garden and me on TV, although I am not so sure about me.”

Laura Walden, from Gardeners’ World, said: “We chose to film at Scampston because it is one of the RHS’s partner gardens that looks particularly good in the autumn and the modern walled garden, with its intense planting, provides such a great contrast with the parkland and traditional gardens around Scampston Hall.

“It was great to discover a photograph of the team of gardeners from Scampston taken about 1910 when there were 10 gardeners, compared to the one and a half, plus a few dedicated volunteers that there are now.”

Gardeners’ World will be on BBC2 on Friday at 8.30pm.
