“I LIKE his accent – it’s easy on the ear. And he’s not an irritating idiot like a lot of them. He’s quick-witted too. Oh and Eurovision. I wouldn't say he's better than Terry Wogan, but different in a good way. Yes, all in all, I do like him.”

So says Signora Martini, as if to confirm that Graham Norton is indeed every mother’s favourite TV personality.

"But what's this got to do with wine," she asks?

"Well, he has his own wine label and, not to ruin the surprise or anything, but I've got you a bottle for Mother's Day tomorrow."

For those who didn't know, it is indeed true - Graham Norton does have his own wine, and so surely it is a good option for a Mother's Day gift.

He's been doing this wine malarkey for a few years now in fact, to great success too. His own-label 2015 Sauvignon Blanc quickly sold out and won various awards, leading him to expand production and also add Australia Shiraz to his range.

They're available at Majestic, and the one Signora Martini is getting is the 2016 GN Sauv Blanc, priced £10.99 (or £8.99 with the mix six offer).

It hails from the much-lauded Marlborough wine region of New Zealand, and is produced by Invivo Wines, with Norton in charge of blending it alongside Invivo's chief winemaker.

For this 2016 effort, they brought all the wines to Cork, in Norton's native Republic of Ireland, to finalise the blend, which marries the tropical aromatic flavours of the Wairau Valley samples with the punchier, herbaceous characteristics of those from the more rugged Awatere Valley.

"That's it. My perfect blend... and it's lovely," Norton says on the label. "Tropical fruit, a bit of zing... cheers to that!"

Cheers indeed. This 12.5 per cent tipple is rather zingy, yet personable. As one might expect given Norton's chat shows, it's the kind of wine to freshen the palate while having a chinwag with best friends.

Also as one might expect, its fruit salad flavours are exuberant and persistent, and there's a deceptive cutting edge too, but all with a soft acid finish.

It's won some awards too.

Is it a showstopper? Well, we'll chat with Signora Martini tomorrow.

If your mum prefers her wine red, meanwhile, then how about you say it with flowers, as they say. Or Fleur, as they say in France.

Majestic have available a George Duboeuf Fleurie wine (£10.99), one of the 10 crus of Beaujolais.

Duboeuf is one of the more famed winemakers in this region to the south of Burgundy, to such an extent he's earned himself the nickname the King of Beaujolais.

This classic crimson Fleurie, which comes in at 13.5 per cent, has a fragrant, floral perfume, as you may expect, and fresh cherry fruit flavours with a light tannic presence.

Put it in the fridge for a little bit before serving to take it down a few notches from your typical room temperature and it's an elegant feminine tipple perfect for mum to have with her lovely light lunch.
