THIS new-look wine column is already a week old and still we can’t think of a name for it.

We’ve gone from Pete’s Plonk (too downmarket – Ed) to Wine & Dandy (too hoighty-toighty – Ed) to Martini Extra Dry (too vermouth – me).

Then there’s You’re Having A Carafe (too jokey – Ed), Cork Blimey! (still too jokey – Ed), Vin The Know (that’s a matter of opinion – reader), and Martini’s Sparkling Wine Column (that’s also a matter of opinion – reader).

The likes of Clarety At Last (bit of a slur on previous wine columnists), Let’s Go Fermental (it’s not all about being sloshed) and 50 Shades Of Grape (oo-er, missus) came and went.

One office wag then suggested Martini Uncorked (what are you trying to say?!) and another shouted Put A Cork In It (we were getting on their nerves by this point).

Then came Martini Rosso (it’s not just about reds), Martini Bianco (nor whites) and Martini On The Rocks (this new column’s on the rocks, more like). So, here we are, stuck with the rather sober if pleasingly simple Martini On Wine. If anyone has any suggestions, therefore, send them in.

Which reminds me – suggestions.

If you’re after a light-bodied summer red, it might be worth trying a Frappato, pictured, a grape variety from Sicily.

Available online from The Wine Society, for £7.95, is a 2014 vintage from the highly-regarded 117-year-old family-run Nicosia winery (named after founder Francesco Nicosia, not the capital of Cyprus).

It’s a bit dry for my liking but it’s fresh and blueberry-fruity. They advise to drink it “cellar cool” but for those of us without cellars, just stick it in the fridge for a bit on a warm day (yes you really can do that with some reds), or keep it near ice if in the garden. It’d probably benefit from being left open half an hour too. Try it with cold meats or maybe even fish if you’re peckish.

In the meantime, think of a column title please.

* A quick heads up. There’s 25 per cent off bottles of wine when you buy six or more in store or online from Sainsbury’s until next Sunday.
