ORIGINALLY released in 2013 in the US, a short UK tour week has prompted the release of this little-known but rather precious curiosity.
Straight No Chaser are a ten-piece, all-male a capella troupe originally formed from students of Indiana University. Although novel and sprightly fresh, their act was all but stolen by those naughty Glee boys, but those wanting the real thing should investigate this set.
Straight No Chaser must have a very good agent, and fans among the rich and famous. Phil Collins, Elton John, Seal, Dolly Parton, Sara Barellis and Jason Mraz all contribute vocals to the boys’ updated barbershop interpretations of the guests’ classic hits.
But although it’s certainly interesting to hear the likes of Dolly’s Jolene performed in this manner first time around, these are certainly not the definitive versions. Like whisky itself, Straight No Chaser should be tasted, but not consumed in too great a quantity.
