MARC Cerrone, the French drummer who found fame in California, is hailed as a disco phenomenon.
To recognise such exalted status here’s his best of... hmmm. Well, there’s no shortage of material – 36 tracks over two cds. But unless you’re a dedicated disco diva or dude, most of this is as appealing as lift musak.
All elements are prevalent and erect – trance-like beats, whoops and falsettos, Philly-type strings and electronica. But aside from Cerrone’s reworking of Le Freak in Freak Connection and a sublime rendition of Supernature, the rest is Euro disco-pap. The nadir is a disco version of The House Of The Rising Sun – no, no, no. For disco check out Chic, borrow the Bee Gees, or acquire KC And The Sunshine Band.
Other blinding dance tracks are Blue Monday (New Order), Love Shack (the B52s), Fame (David Bowie) and Get Lucky (Daft Punk). Just leave Cerrone well alone.
