IT is 1909 and Maud Heighton wants to make her way in the world as a painter so has left Darlington to study in Paris.

While the glamour of the city attracts artists and students alike, Maud soon finds herself trapped in poverty and wondering where the next meal will come from when a fellow student finds her a job as a companion to a young lady.

Maud soon becomes fond of Sylvie Morel and her brother who live very comfortably and who seem to enjoy spoiling her, but Sylvie has an addiction to opium and it is not long before Maud is drawn into her secret.

As torrential rain brings floods to Paris, Maud finds herself drowning in lies and deceipt in a murky world where nothing is quite what it seems. Can she escape the terrors of the city or will she be lost forever?

This is a gripping historical thriller from a Darlington-born author who is gaining in reputation with each novel.

On reading this one, one can see why. It has a good plot, believable characters, a wonderful atmosphere and is written in a way that keeps you eagerly turning the pages until the very end.

It is a satisfying read that will make you want more from this talented writer
