About this neighbourhood
The district of Selby consists of two policing areas, each under the command of an Inspector. The Inspector covering the town of Selby is Lindsey Stamp. The district has borders with Humberside and South Yorkshire; it is well served by major trunk roads, M62 to the south, A64 to the north and the A1 to the West. It has direct rail links to York, Leeds, Doncaster and Hull. Built on the banks of the River Ouse and established two years after the Norman Conquest, the town is dominated by its Abbey; the first monastery to be founded in the North after the Norman Conquest and one of the few in England to have survived as a parish church. The Abbey was granted its founding charter by William the Conqueror and has connections with France, Germany and the USA. It is reputed to be the birthplace in September 1068 of King Henry I of England, the son of King William I and Queen Mathilda. Until recently the town was a shipbuilding town and inland port. A market takes place every Monday and on Bank Holidays in particular it draws crowds from all over the region. Industrial development across the area continues with smaller businesses replacing the larger factories that have closed or moved on. Seen as a commuter town for York and Leeds to name but two places; the population continues to increase, bring with it the demand on local resources such as your local policing team. Selby District (Town) Safer Neighbourhood Area covers a geographical area made up of the wards of Selby North, Selby West, Selby South and Brayton.
The force responsible for policing and crime prevention in this area is North Yorkshire Police.
