The Web Adventure Park, York
SIMON RITCHIE goes up in the world to try out one of York’s newest attractions – for children and adults!
Where: Wired – High Ropes Challenge, part of The Web Adventure Park, Wigginton Road, York.
Why: It’s high time, if you pardon the pun, that York had somewhere like this. The city is great for museums and such like, but sometimes kids (and adults) just want to do something a little more adventurous.
Wired, part of the Web Adventure Park which includes Creepy Crawlies, is made up of 22 obstacles of varying difficulty – about 20 to 30ft off the ground.
I went with my son, Elliot, and his friend, Jack, both aged ten. After getting their harnesses on and being given safety advice from the very professional and friendly instructor, the boys were off. There was no looking back.
I tried to catch up with them, but no chance. The boys were like monkeys, they loved every minute of it. From the ground, the course looks fairly easy, but believe you me, it’s not!
There was one particular obstacle where you had to walk a tightrope and pull yourself along by grabbing a number of ropes which were dangling in front of you. It sounds straightforward, but I nearly lost my footing a few times. Thank heavens the harness was there!
The course ends with a 30-ft long zip slide, which brings you safely down to earth.
Wired is challenging both on the body and the mind, but it’s great fun. Oh, and you get a brilliant view of the Minster and the big wheel, too.
Refreshments: The Club House café is a great place to quench your thirst after all that climbing or watch your friends in action.
It serves a good variety of reasonably priced hot and cold drinks and snacks, including baguettes, hot dogs and cakes.
Child-friendly: The course is aimed for children aged seven upwards.
Admission: Peak (Weekends/holidays), £17; Pre-booked (48hrs min) £15; Groups (min 10) £13.50.
Off peak (Mon-Fri) £15; pre-booked £12; Groups £10.80.
Open daily from 9.30am to 4.30pm (winter times).
Car parking: Plenty of free spaces.
Toilets: Yes.
How to get there: From the A1237 York outer ring road, take the Wigginton/Helmsley exit off the Clifton Moor roundabout, after 50 yards, turn right.
