Mike Laycock steps back in time to the world of vet James Herriot
What and where? The World of James Herriot, 23, Kirkgate, Thirsk.
Why? The TV series All Creatures Great And Small may now be confined to repeats of repeats on obscure digital channels, but the humorous stories of James Herriot’s veterinary life in the picturesque Yorkshire Dales and Vale of York will never be forgotten by millions of viewers and readers, including me.
And for a nostalgia fest, you can’t beat a trip to the James Herriot Centre in Thirsk, situated in the original home of the author behind the books, Alf Wight. The centre was opened almost a decade ago after a £1.4 million restoration scheme.
We wandered through recreated sets from the series, where we could stand behind the cameras or walk on set and appear on screen. There were also waiting, treatment and dispensary rooms, along with the original Austin 7 car used in the programme, which has been parked in the pretty cottage garden at the back.
We also saw also displays of artefacts from the old days of the vet’s world, and an interactive gallery for children offering science games with a veterinary twist.
When is it open? Daily from 10am to 5pm, last admission 4pm.
How much? Adults: £5.75, concessions: £4.50, children (5-15) £4, under fives: free. Family (two adults, two children: £16.25.
