Mike Laycock discovers art treasures galore at Burton Agnes Hall

Where? Burton Agnes Hall, on the A614, near Bridlington.

Why? It’s got some gorgeous, colourful gardens, including a jungle garden with broad-leaved plants, fruit and potager areas and a national collection of campanulas.

There is also the fun of getting lost in a hedge maze and playing snakes and ladders on one of a number of giant boards.

On the day we visited, there was even a Civil War battle on the lawns, courtesy of the Sealed Knot. This weekend, there’s a Gardeners’ Fair – a summer celebration of gardening.

We also climbed on board a charming, if slightly incongruous, old London Routemaster bus parked outside the hall to visit an exhibition of works by local artists.

The art on display inside the red-brick and stone Elizabethan hall, built in 1601 by Robert Smythson, is hugely impressive, particularly the Impressionist paintings.

It’s like a little corner of the Musee D’Orsay in Paris, with works by artists including Renoir, Manet, Corot, Matisse and Pissaro.

The stunning, light-filled Long Gallery, with an elaborately plastered barrel ceiling, is a great setting for such paintings, as well as some superb sculptures.

The house is also packed with fine porcelain, furniture and sculptures.

When? The hall, cafe, shops and gardens are open daily until October 31, from 11am - 5pm How much? House & Gardens: Adult (£7); Child (£3.50), Concession (£6.50).

Gardens only: Adult (£4); Child (£2.50); Concession (£3.50).

Refreshments? Yes, there’s the appropriately named Impressionists’ Café.
