AT Harewood House this weekend, you can experience Freerunning@, an open-air street dance show that is touring Britain’s stately homes and parks throughout the summer.

This “jaw-dropping urban ballet” performance brings together parkour, martial arts, break dancing and capoeira in a display of extreme sports athleticism, agility, acrobats and grace, courtesy of creative director Sam Parham, who did plenty of the stunts in Pirates Of The Caribbean 4 – On Stranger Tides.

Free Running or “parkour”, should you be wondering, involves “efficient movement around obstacles”, while capoeira is a Brazilian martial art that combines elements of dance and music.

Triple Guinness world record holder Parham takes the starring role in a show that tells the story of Jake, a homeless teenager who teaches himself Free Running. A successful open audition as a film stunt extra gives Jake his big break, but as the punishing schedule for filming action scenes begins he realises how much he still has to learn from stunt co-ordinator and martial arts expert Scarlett, played jointly by Chloe Bruce, who has worked on Harry Potter films, and martial arts performer Paige Cerson.

When filming is thrown into crisis, Jake is faced with the biggest challenge of his life, both personally and professionally.

Freerunning@ is the first urban ballet theatrical tour of its kind to be staged in Britain. Free Running already has featured in the film Casino Royale, in the routines of street dance troupe Diversity and in the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

It now forms part of the training of athletes and was used to highlight London transport issues when a leading free runner challenged a London Underground passenger to see who could reach their destination first.

Parham takes it into the world of theatre for an interactive show where audience members become part of the production as “extras” and at other times are so close to the action, they can see the moves first hand.

The show combines classical music with contemporary beats, street dance with Free Running, choreography with improvisation, and heritage houses with city street action.

Producer Susannah Daley says: “Free Running is one of the most exciting extreme sports around at the moment and is being promoted as an official sport by the Mayor of London.

“The ten Free Running athletes in our show are remarkable and audiences of all ages will be able to enjoy their agility, strength and athleticism in an exhilarating performance in a fantastic setting.”

As well as performances at noon and 4pm, tomorrow and Sunday, the Free Runners will hold workshops at 2.30pm each day, as part of the Games In The Park weekend at Harewood House, near Leeds.
