Northern Ballet to stage The Great Gatsby

NORTHERN Ballet will stage a full-length ballet of The Great Gatsby next year.

Choreographed by artistic director David Nixon, the ballet will be adapted from F Scott Fitzgerald’s classic American novel.

On New York’s Long Island, in the heady, indulgent days of the 1920s, Nick Caraway comes to know his infamous neighbour Jay Gatsby, a mysterious millionaire with a secret past and a penchant for lavish parties.

As the sparkling façade of Gatsby’s world begins to slip, Caraway sees the loneliness, obsession and tragedy that lie beneath.

This will be Nixon’s 14th new ballet for Northern Ballet, where he has been artistic director since 2001. After his premieres of Cleopatra and Beauty Of The Beast for the Leeds company in 2011, he will be in charge of choreography, direction and costumes for The Great Gatsby; co-direction will be by Patricia Doyle and sets by Jerome Kaplan.

The world première will be staged at Leeds Grand Theatre on Saturday, March 2, 2013.
