SHAKESPEARE and gorillas may make an unlikely combination, but one arts lecturer in York is hoping audiences will go ape for her latest performance.
Combining elements of King Lear and King Kong, Claire Hind, 41, a senior lecturer at York St John University, dressed up as a gorilla and met the public while being filmed as part of a short film entitled Kong Lear.
Commenting on the filming, Clare said: “We liked the idea that King Lear and King Kong, both strong male characters, could be played by a female.
“We managed to draw parallels between the stories and I was happy with the outcome.
“We got to bring the performance alive and I hope that every year the gorilla will take to the streets of York.”
Kong Lear will be shown alongside Ghost Track, a performance also about King Lear, at York Theatre Royal on Tuesday, April 3.
