NOT one, not two, but three members of the Burley family will be making their stage debut in We Are Theatre's The Wizard Of Oz in York: mum Kelly, daughter Amelia and the family dog Reggie.

"It's the first show we've ever been in," says a delighted Kelly. "Amelia has always been a fan of the film; we even had a Wizard Of Oz party when she was three years old. She's now nine and saw the auditions advertised; she asked me to go along as support, so we took Reggie too and we all got cast."

Mum will play the Wicked Witch of the West; Amelia will be multi-role playing as an Osian, Munchkin, Poppy and Jitterbug; Reggie, their five-year-old Shih Tzu, inevitably will steal scenes as Dorothy's pooch Toto, "the sweetest little dog in all of Oz".

"I'm a dog groomer in Huntington, where I own the Pretty Paws Dog Grooming salon," says Kelly. "Someone came into the salon and didn't want Reggie after only having him a week. We took him in and thought we had found him a 'forever home' but unfortunately this did not work out. We took him back again and decided to keep him. He's the most adorable dog ever, so funny too, and very chilled out: as you can see, he's happy to take a ride in the basket on a bike."

We Are Theatre will stage the RSC version of The Wizard of Oz at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre, York, on June 23 at 7.30pm and June 24 at 2.30pm and 7.30pm. "This version plays close to the original 1939 film and features all the popular songs such as Over The Rainbow and We’re Off To See The Wizard," says Kelly. "Audience members will delight in visiting Kansas and Oz as they follow Dorothy, played by 13-year old Indie Star Ramsay-Wilson, of CBBC fame, on her journey down the Yellow Brick Road.

"They will meet the most loyal group of friends, Scarecrow (Meg Badrick), Tin Man (John Hawker) and not forgetting the Cowardly Lion (Mike Kimpton), and adults and children alike will want to hide in their seats when they meet the Wicked Witch of the West, complete with cackle and green face paint."

In keeping with We Are Theatre’s all-inclusive policy, the cast ranges in age from five years old to adults under the musical direction of Jess Douglas and Lee Saltmer, with choreography by Beth North and Abbie Brownlee, plus a live band made up of musicians from across York.

The show is suitable for all ages and tickets are on sale at £13.60, concessions £11.60, on 01904 501935 or at josephrowntreetheatre.co.uk
