NUNS went on the run around Tadcaster, stopping the traffic in a photoshoot for Tadcaster Theatre Company’s spring production of Dan Goggin's musical comedy Nunsense.

Presented by special arrangement with Samuel French Ltd at the Riley-Smith Hall from May 10 to 13, the show features 13 nuns in a plot "guaranteed to have you laughing in the aisles," says chairman Catherine Marshall. "If you fancy a fun night out, Nunsense is definitely for you,” she says.

Without giving too much away, the story revolves around the Little Sisters of Hoboken discovering that their cook, Sister Julia, Child of God (played by Richard Goodall), has accidentally poisoned 52 of the sisters. In dire need of funds for the burials, the Sisters decide the best way to raise the money is to put on a variety show, so they take over the school auditorium, at present set up for the eighth grade production of Grease.

Enter Reverend Mother Regina (Beverley Goring), a former circus performer; Sister Mary Hubert (Alison Davies), the Mistress of Novices; Sister Robert Anne (Louise McDonald), a streetwise nun from Brooklyn; Sister Mary Leo (Diane Eyers), a novice who wants to be a ballerina, and the delightfully wacky Sister Mary Amnesia (Claire Meadley), the nun who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head.

Dan Goggin's Nunsense has become an international phenomenon, chalking up more than 5,000 productions worldwide and being translated into 21 languages, and now Tadcaster is joining the merry throng.

The Riley-Smith Hall will be set out in a relaxed cabaret style with round tables of ten seats and the bar will be open for next week's 7.30pm evening shows and 2.30pm Saturday matinee.

Tickets cost £10 on 07502 506438, online at ticketsource.co.uk/event/177304 or in person between 10am and 12 noon on Saturday at Gallery 42, Tadcaster.
