THE on-your-bike theatre group The HandleBards are cycling their environmentally friendly way to York with a first for the pedal-powered company.

This summer they assembled their inaugural all-female troupe to complement "The Boys". So far "The Girls" have ridden more than 1,000 miles to perform The Taming Of The Shrew and Romeo And Juliet at 50 locations around Britain, and this autumn they are visiting schools as well as staging public performances.

Tomorrow night, doors open at 6.30pm for their "gloriously eccentric take on Shakespeare's timeless tragedy" Romeo And Juliet at the Merchant Adventurers' Hall, in Fossgate.

After pedalling from London with all of their gear in tow, Elle Dillon-Reams, Grace Cheatle, Gabriella Margulies and Lotte Tickner take to the Great Hall floor at 7pm to perform Shakespeare's epic tale of two young lovers who have everything stacked against them. Elle and Lotte each will play six roles each; Grace, four, including Juliet, and Gabriella, three, led by Romeo, in The Handlebards' extremely energetic, charmingly chaotic show.

Tickets cost £12, concessions for over 60s and students, £10, children, £7, on 01904 654818 or on the door. Refreshments will be available before the performance and during the interval at an additional charge.
