FIGHT or flight? There is always a choice, as 2Faced Dance's triple bill of new commissions by three female choreographers will explore at York Theatre Royal on Thursday.

The physically adventurous Hereford company's artistic director, Tamsin Fitzgerald, together with Lenka Vagnerová and newcomer Rebecca Evans, will combine ground-breaking movement and theatre, striking designs and original musical composition at 7.30pm.

"Run marks a pivotal point for the company within both our touring history and the important work that we're leading on within gender equality," says Tamsin, whose company visited India this year. "We're really starting to see a spark of change surrounding the barriers faced by female choreographers working within the dance sector.

"With a new company of dancers and an exceptional choreographic, design and musical team working on the creation of the work, Run will mark one of the most exciting periods within the company’s history and demonstrates a real commitment to supporting women as artists. Not because we have to but because they're talented, produce great work and this needs to be shared with people across the globe."

Run's three works look at "human choice and our decision to fight or take flight from the darker side of humanity". Lenka Vagnerová, whose work considers the physical capabilities and boundaries of man’s body, says: "I'm very pleased that Tamsin has asked me to be part of this triple bill. As a female choreographer, I look forward to working with the company’s all-male group; I think it will be challenging and rewarding for both parties.

"I'm curious to see how audiences react to an all-female choreographed bill, and if the choice of topics, movement qualities and theatrical situations are gender influenced. I've chosen to work on the theme of fallen angels, cast out from heaven for sin and rebellion. My intention is to find different layers and connections in mythological fallen angels and human beings in order to explore the choice of good and evil in our lives and life path. Our society is full of fallen angels...".

In May, 2Faced Dance held its inaugural event entitled The BENCH to discuss the issue of gender disparity for female choreographers working in Britain's contemporary dance sector, whereupon Rebecca Evans was awarded the initiative’s first commission to produce work for Run. "It's an honour to have my work shown alongside Tamsin and Lenka, two established choreographers," she says. "This opportunity to further develop my ideas would not have been possible without The BENCH, a programme of support for female choreographers of which I was one of the first Fellows."

Company regulars Jack Humphrey, Jason Boyle and Ed Warner are joined in Run by 2Faced newcomers Louis Parker-Evans and Kai Tomioka, who was a finalist in the 2015 BBC Young Dancer competition. Run's music has been composed by Angus MacRae and Tomáš Vychytil.
